What amazes me about Joyce is the way in which he was able to capture the depth of female psychology and sexuality at a time when Freud was going around calling us the "dark continent". You will recall that this book was banned in the US until 1933 because it was thought to be pornographic and obscene. Today we know Joyce as the inventor of stream of consciousness, and one of the best writers of the century.
